J.E. KARNEC, born in 1865 (in Austria after GERALD SCHURR), died in 1934. Painter of landscapes, seascapes, port landscapes, water landscapes. “Orientalist trend” (according to BENEZIT). “He worked mainly in Rouen, but also in Paris and Venice. Some of his Orientalist landscapes are treated in a fat paste that tends to melt the forms. BENEZIT. “… the coast has been gaining strength over the past few years on oil compositions on cardboard or wood, almost always small formats, signed by this Austrian artist (?) To the enigmatic biography: we only know that he was Captain Long Course in the French Merchant Navy. The reduced dimensions are suitable for its extremely tight, dense, tofu technique, suggesting more than describing Normandy landscapes, Rouen in general, animated by swarming forms emerging from a generously kneaded material.
